LIFE WRITING WORKSHOP AT FARMERS’ WELSH LAVENDER

8TH AUGUST 2021

This one day writing workshop will focus on Life Writing. Whether your interest is in memoir, travel writing, social history, nature writing or self-discovery, this will be your opportunity to explore techniques for turning lived experience into compelling narrative.

The harvest will be in full swing, the scent of lavender filling the air. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the lavender distillery, and you can even take a dip in the pond.

THE THING ABOUT THINGS 2020-2021

Researching the story of Lev’s violin taught me that an object can be a wonderful prompt for triggering the imagination, unearthing the unexpected, and grappling with techniques for bringing physical detail to the page. This was the inspiration for The Thing About Things, a new Open Ground writing project for older people at risk of isolation during lockdown. The things in the collection of the Judge’s Lodging Museum – have become an inspiration for participants’ writing. We post envelopes to them every three weeks, packing them with photographs of rooms in the museum and objects in its collection, poems, documents from the archive and the script of a carefully structured workshop. Each pack is the route to slipping behind the scenes in the museum, and making their own, unique connections with local history. They submit their writing by post or email, and we send them feedback with the next writing pack.

The project is managed by The Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts, and Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.
